Truck Mechanic (Fleet Maintenance Technician)

Overview

A Truck Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing heavy-duty trucks and trailers to ensure safe and efficient operation. This role involves diagnosing mechanical and electrical issues, performing preventative maintenance, and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel/gas engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, suspension, and electrical systems
  • Perform regular inspections and preventive maintenance on trucks and trailers
  • Conduct diagnostics using computerized tools and manual methods
  • Replace or repair parts such as bearings, brake pads, wheel hubs, injectors, and filters
  • Troubleshoot hydraulic and pneumatic systems
  • Adjust, align, and calibrate components for optimal vehicle performance
  • Maintain accurate records of services, repairs, and parts used
  • Ensure all work complies with relevant safety standards and regulations
  • Communicate effectively with drivers, fleet managers, and supervisors regarding needed repairs and maintenance schedules
  • Keep the workshop clean, organized, and stocked with necessary materials and tools

Skills and Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent; vocational or technical certification in diesel mechanics preferred

Experience: 2+ years of experience as a diesel or truck mechanic (or equivalent trade experience)

Technical Skills

  • Knowledge of diesel/gas engine systems and vehicle electronics
  • Experience using diagnostic tools and repair equipment
  • Ability to interpret service manuals and schematics

  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • Time management and organizational ability

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift items up to 60 lbs
  • Comfortable working in various weather conditions
  • Standing, bending, and kneeling for extended periods

  • Typically works in a repair shop setting
  • Exposure to engine noise, grease, and mechanical tools
